Election Pledge 3 – Climate Change

We can all do our bit to help combat cliomate change – every small step we take together helps to safeguard our planet for generations to come. At a local level I am working with Corbridge Parish Council and the County Council and to do what we can in Corbridge.

The County Council has an important role to play driving change and acting as a Climate Change Leader but every town and village can do its bit,

In Corbridge – I’m bringing electric vehicle charging points tot he centre of the village and to the new car park when it is built, I am exploring a District Heating scheme, championing tree planting and will continue to fight green belt development.

At a local level we have a Corbridge resident taking part in a Community Climate Champion pilot programme and other local broader climate changes initiatives being worked on include Electric vehicle charging points to be installed in Corbridge this year in Main Street, exploring a district heating scheme and a quite large scale tree planting initiative.

Across the County – Friends of the Earth have rated us second in all UK Counties for our climate change work – see the full list here.

As the cabinet member for Corporate Services and a member of the Council’s Climate Change Working Group I have been working to embed ambitious targets and a clear plan to achieve them. You can read the Northumberland Climate Action Plan 2021-23 here which shows our commitment towards protecting our environment.

There is a glass recycling trial happening in three areas across the county and we should be hearing the results of that soon and we can then consider options for extending it. We were one of the first local authorities to reopen Household Waste Recycling Centres after they were closed as a Covid response. We have recruited a specific Communications officer to work on climate change and encouraging recycling is a key part of her job. We’re working with schools on education in this respect.

Should I be re-elected environmental work will be a priority.
