Each year all councils are obliged to write off irrecoverable debt and this year Northumberland County Council is writing off £1.95m. It is a lot of money but it only represents about 0.2% of council revenues and is similar to previous years. The largest chunks of this debt are business rates & council tax and every effort is made to recover all debts. Northumberland performs well in national bench-marking for collecting what is owed to it. Only when a debt cannot be recovered will it be written off.
